- develops a strategy to move an audience
- logical and emotional appealing
- govern by art and method
- words are powerful
- information is useful in making judgements
- communication can be evaluated and improve

Semiotic tradition
- focuses on signs and symbols as a bridge between words and elicit messages
- fills in the gaps of misunderstanding
- includes signs, symbols, meaning, referent, code, and understanding
- idea of the need for a common language
- lies in opposition to theories that suggest that words have correct meanings, signs stand for object, and language is neutral

IDs:
1. Thomas Savery “Captain Savery” – Wrote the book “The Miner’s Friend” printed in London in 1702, attempted to fix the miner’s problem of how to get the water out of the mines, created the device “an Engine to raise Water by Fire” simply another proposed experiment, took careful steps to publicize his ideas and got it patented by demonstrating it to the royal court in 1698, the royal society then published it’s first Philosophical Transactions in June, 1699, “fire engine” limited significance for future steam engine design – hardly an engine there were no moving parts, 1702 – a number of devices were added to the operator to know the water levels in the boilers, to recycle water in portions, simplify operation by linking the carious valves to hand levers, Savery was a man from a modest background that was practical.
2. Coalbrookdale – a city has a lot of technological advances, there were a lot of canal systems and bridges of cast iron, Abraham Barby gotten his beginning making mills for malt (form of barley that went into ale & beer) – was able to thin castings in sand molds, and operate his own furnaces – 1708 he moved up the Severn River from Bristol to Coalbrookdale and took over an old blast furnace –Coalbrookdale has easy accessible coal and adapting it for iron making was very appealing. – uses “coke” (needs higher heat to produce more liquid & it’s cheaper)
3. Encyclopedie – Diderot “should encompass not only the fields already covered by the academies, but each and every branch of human knowledge” (1750 – 1751)
4. “The Rocket” – 1829, designed and built by Robert Stephenson (George Stephenson’s son) train locomotive on the Rainhill trials, basic form of the steam locomotive, using multiple tubes through it’s boiler to bring up it’s steam quickly and twin pistons that were directly linked to the drive wheel. Still needs a driver and a coal person, to put the coal inside to create the steam.
5. James Brindley – created the Bridgewater Canal sponsored by the Duke of Bridgewater, something special about this was that James Brindley put sealing in the canal so it would not crack.
6. The Great Eastern – June 1865, gigantic ship set out from Atlantic with the entire cable in it’s hold laying it out towards Newfoundland but 2/3 of the cable slipped out of reach and sank to the bottom of the ocean. – next year another attempt was made and it succeeded.
7. Chinese Porcelain – (16th & 17th century) high end of the market, remarkable and provocative to promoters of local industries, made from fine white clay, Wedgewood (master potter in Burslem)
8. Robert Fulton – born & raised in rural SE PA in the years before the American Revolution, in 1786 @ 21 years old set out to be an artist to the most successful artist Benjamin West – he went from artist to inventor, from canals & marble cutters to submarines, his patron was Robert Livingston (prominent member of NY state’s landowning aristocracy) was interested in steam boat began in late 1780s. – built the Clermont (North River Steam Boat to East River off lower Manhattan)
9. Lowell, MA – a city that has water power, become that largest textile center in America, has a canal system that has a whole bunch of factories in front of that system, brought in girls from farms and immigrant families in to work, there were child labor and bad working environment – a city that prosper but died when the depression came.
10. calico – simple, light cotton cloth, printed with floral or other colorful patterns – John Humphreys had led a mob in Spitalfield about 7 weeks earlier, several 100 weavers roamed the east London streets, they were looking for anything that has to deal with calico, and destroyed it (calico riots of 1719) – calico was discovered in Indian and transported to America – Calico act banned all products of calico, but working conditions did not improve – calico started to monopolized and took over other fabrics.
11. SS Savannah – American’s hybrid of sailing ship and side wheel steamer built in 1818, known as the first steam ship to cross the Atlantic ocean (May to June 1819) – had to switch back to sailing after using the steam most of the way.
12. Harpers Ferry Armory – started to work with Roswell Lee (1815 became superintendent of the U.S. Armory) wanted to create “the great object of uniformity” – got a contract with Harpers Ferry Amory (wanted interchangeable parts) to make guns

Themes: Technology and….
Labor
Marketing
Materials
Laws/Government/Politics
Alcohol
Globalization
Transportation
Science
Education
Business
Technological Choice
Natural Resources
Industrialization

Plato, Phaedrus – Love speeches

Loving like the Greeks – Adult man “adolescent” boy

why?

it’s a homo erotic culture back then in the Greek – 21st century “gay” terms don’t matter

it’s just for body and pleasure

This “pleasure” point is a controversial thing – erotic “pleasures” – good or bad?

Pleasure for man; mentor for boy

older man – they question about whether or not he could keep his pleasure in

the mentorship – could last for years and years

the younger boy

2 key problems emerge:

“whose” pleasure?

problem of manhood – citizenship vs. sexual

from being a beloved to becoming a male prostitute

got to question about whether or not it is a good or bad relationship

Plato, Phaedrus – 1st love speech

scandalous idea – that the boy should go with the non-love instead of the lover

the non-lover is mostly pleasure

the young boy is most likely to go down the prostitution

Key assumption: Lover’s madness

as your are madly in love – that the man will follow the young boy around

this explains the crazy behaviors – saying that the strange behaviors is when the lovers gone mad

once the pleasure/sex is fulfilled then the lover’s madness goes away

the lover becomes rational again

and realizing that they are unable to give gifts forever or taking care of you forever

gifts exchange – sexually (the boy gives up his beauty to the man & the man needs to give gifts to the younger boy)

assuming the relationship is based on respect and trust

thinking that it’s a long term friendship

the gifts keep on getting bigger, ultimately giving the politically power

Plato, Phaedrus – 2nd love speech

the speech itself isn’t that special (show off)

it repeats itself over and over

Socrates says that I can make a better speech (p16)

the speech is the same as the 1st speech

organizational differences

defines “love” first – that love is madness (dialectical element)

a good speech vs. bad speeches is how well it is a organized

it has a connection with the good/bad soul

question of organized

if you see an organized speech, others view them as a good soul/people = well organized

main points from more importance to less importance – hierarchy

mind – non-lover will care for your mind/soul (1st)

body – non-lover will protect your body (2nd)

possession – non-lover will protect your things, no stealing (3rd)

Socrates gave a better speech than Phaedrus

Socrates great speech

Socrates freaks out after 2nd speech, why?

because he thinks that he has spoken ill of love which is from the gods

love – lovers will take your mind, body, possession in 2nd speech

speaking ill of love, is speaking ill of gods – because it came from the gods

because love is one of those great gifts that gods has given us

So Socrates gives a second speech – this is the platonic love comes from

New thesis – give favors to lover

New definition of madness (p25)

not all madness bad, god given

god given madness is good

love is a god sent madness

So now a well organized speech is not enough for a good speech.

a good speech has to be organized AND telling the truth

meaning first speech is bad and so is the second speech

Platonic Love

if you are a true philosopher, if a young boy offers his love then he shouldn’t take it

because the philosopher should be taking give of the boy’s soul instead of the body

taking care of the soul allows to reincarnate base on the Greek culture

the right thing to do is not to give into your bad pleasures

question: what makes it moral/immoral?

Plato – it’s pleasure orientated, doing what’s best for your soul or other’s soul

promoted pleasure as an “end” – bad

promoted pleasure to have good benefits in the long run for the soul – good

to care about the soul of another is to help them take control over their pleasure

basics – friendship, politics, knowing yourself, etc.

having self control

the point of this story is about a long relationship

The Soul in the Story

The soul according to the great speech immortality of the soul – “heaven, fall, return” 10,000 versus 3000 years to return. – if struck by love the soul can return in 3000 years.

Soul before the fall

metaphor – chariot – driver and winged

2 horses – 1 good horse (good) & 1 bad horse (pleasure)

Before the fall see pure knowledge – recollection theory of knowledge

Soul in Human body

soul falls into human body – lose wings

why fall? – because of the bad horse & forgetting weighs down the chariot – pleasure pulls you away from true knowledge

the time spent in a human body – is to remember what they saw

Hierarchy of souls – soul types basedon what they saw of truth

9 different types of souls (1 to 9 – the farther away from the truth)

God given madness
